Academic Qualifications

PhD

Following on from his BSc (2.1) in Mining Engineering, Karl was sponsored by British Coal to investigate the effect of geological faults on mining subsidence, and come up with methods to predict/reduce the surface damage as a result of longwall coal mining activities to local properties. British Coal was paying large sums of compensation and wanted to reduce the negative perception of coal mining in the local communities. Karl developed two new methods of predicting fault movements and was able to reduce the significantly reduce the damage to properties on housing estates as a result of his work. Aa paper was subsequently published in a recognised journal.

BSc

Mining Engineering was a very broad engineering degree, and it allowed Karl to gain experience is everything from electronics, logistics, finance, mathematics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics through to management and law. This engineering-based education also allowed him exposure to various technical subjects and skill sets. He developed skills that are transferable to most industries such as problem solving, decision making, innovation, project management, team working and communication. Engineering is very much a hands on degree, and this has very much helped Karl throughout his career when he has needed to roll his sleeves up to get the job done.
